References

The Ponderosa Pine tree is an unusual tree in two ways. First, The Ponderosa Pine grows very tall but typically has no branches except at the very top of the tree causing this tree to have one of the longest and straightest branchless trunks of all tree. It has mistakenly been called a lodgepole pine but the lodgepole pine is a different species. Second, the Ponderosa Pine has a unique bark that looks like puzzle pieces. You can even snap off the "puzzle pieces" and reassemble the bark as if you were assembling a 3-d wooden puzzle.
